FIRST TERM SOCIAL STUDIES SCHEME OF WORK FOR PRIMARY TWO

WEEK 1

TOPIC/ CONTENT

SCOPE OF SOCIAL STUDIES

Meaning of scope of social studies: to solve man’s problems.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher explains the scope of social studies.

PUPILS: Find out from home how family takes its social and economic decisions such as, association to join and food to eat.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Pupils textbooks and video clips on how decisions are taken to solve problem.

WEEK 2

TOPIC/ CONTENT

SCOPE OF SOCIAL STUDIES

Areas which social studies focuses:

  • Critical thinking
  • Reflective thinking
  • Problem solving.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher guides pupils to identify areas of focus in social studies.

PUPILS: Find out from home how to think critical, reflective and problem solving.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Pupils textbooks and video clips on how decisions are taken to solve problems.

WEEK 3

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

1. Our physical environment:

  • Some people live in desert condition.

  Others live in fertile places.

  • Some around lakes, rivers or oceans. – Some on the mountains.
  • while some others on low laying areas.

Climate varies tremendously over the globe.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher leads the pupils to discover different physical environment.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Pupils’ textbooks, charts etc.

 

 

WEEK 4

TOPIC/ CONTENT

THE FOOD WE EAT IN OUR CULTURE AS FAMILY MEMBERS

  1. Examples of some Nigerian foods are: Yam, eba, amala, tuwo shinkafa, plantain, rice, beans, cocoyam, pounded yam, akpu, starch, etc

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher uses guided questions to lead pupils to name the various foods we eat in our different cultures.

PUPILS: Participate in the discussion on the types of food.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Pupils text and work books, charts, pictures, etc.

WEEK 5

TOPIC/ CONTENT

THE FOOD WE EAT IN OUR CULTURE AS FAMILY MEMBERS

2. Consequences of eating together as a family: promotes communalism, happiness, family unity and loyalty etc

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher asks the pupils to mention reasons why we eat together.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Picture showing happy moods of people eating together.

 

WEEK 6

TOPIC/ CONTENT

IMPORTANCE OF THESE FOODS TO OUR GROWTH

1. Nutrients in the food we take are:

  • carbohydrates
  • Protein
  • Vitamins
  • Fats and oil.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher leads the pupils through guided questions to mention the nutrients we get from different foods e.g.

-carbohydrates(yam/bread)

  • Protein(meat/fish)
  • Vitamins(fruits/vegetables)
  • Fats and oil(butter/cheese)

WEEK 7

IMPORTANCE OF THESE FOODS TO OUR GROWTH

Importance of these foods to our growth:

  • Supply energy
  • Build our body
  • Keep the body healthy
  • Provides heat and energy.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher guides pupils to identify the functions of the nutrients in the food we take:

-carbohydrates supplies energy to the body.

-protein builds our body

PUPILS: Respond to the teachers questions on the topic.

1. Meaning of greetings: greeting is a way of showing respect to people and appreciate them

Teacher guides pupils through question to list ways of greeting in their locality.

PUPILS: Find out more ways of greeting in our culture.

KEEPING OUR ENVIRONMENT CLEAN

Ways of keeping our environment clean: – Proper disposal of waste

  • Proper use of toilets/urinary.
  • Provision of waste bins.
  • Allowing drains to flow.
  • Clearing and sweeping round our surroundings.
  • Regular sweeping of our homes.

Teacher asks questions to lead pupils to suggest ways of keeping our environment clean.

Meaning of accident:- unplanned events that lead to injury, damage or death.

ACCIDENTS IN THE SCHOOL/HOME

Causes of accidents in school and home.

Identify the causes of accidents at home and school e.g. dangerous and sharp objects like needle, banana peels, razor blade, biros, pencils, etc.

Categories of drugs:

  • Legal drugs

Socially acceptable drugs.

1. Meaning of drug abuse: the use of drugs without the advice of a qualified doctor/pharmacist.

 ACTIVITIES     

Teacher organizes class discussion on drug Abuse.

LEARNING RESOURCE: Pupils textbooks, posters of war against drug abuse.

WEEK 2

TOPIC/ CONTENT

DRUG ABUSE

2. Dangers of drug abuse: mental illness accident, addiction, drop out of school.

 ACTIVITIES

  1. Teacher organizes class discussion on drug abuse and its dangerous effects
  2. Invite resource persons to talk on the dangers of drug abuse.

Teacher guides pupils to list dangers involved in drug abuse.

3. Ways of preventing drug abuse:

  • Avoid bad friends
  • Seek advice of doctors, nurses and Pharmacist before taking drugs.
  • Avoid buying medicine in buses or unauthorized stores
  • Avoid self-medication

Invites resource person to talk on the ways of preventing drug abuse.

HARMFUL SUBSTANCES AND HOW TO AVOID TAKING THEM

1. Meaning of harmful substances: food, water, fruits or drugs that are unfit for human consumption.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher leads the pupils on discussion to discover harmful substances when taken into the body.

LEARNING RESOURCES: Pupils

textbooks, real objects of harmful substances in our environment for pupils’ observation only.

WEEK 5

TOPIC/ CONTENT

HARMFUL SUBSTANCES AND HOW TO AVOID TAKING THEM

3. Examples of harmful substances, stale foods, poorly cooked foods, rotten foods, infested foods, expired foods/drugs, unripe fruits impure water

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher takes pupils to locals shops and market to identify harmful Substances in their environment.

LEARNING RESOURCES: Real objects of harmful substances in their environment e.g. rotten food, impure water unripe fruits, etc.

WEEK 6

TOPIC/ CONTENT

HARMFUL SUBSTANCES AND HOW TO AVOID TAKING THEM

3.Ways of preventing intake of harmful substances:

  • Avoid eating stale poorly cooked dirty and infested food.
  • Avoid taking expired food/drugs.

-Take only drugs that are prescribed by the doctor/physicians.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher asks questions to lead pupils to identify ways of preventing intake of harmful substances.

SOURCES OF DANGER AND INSECURITY

1. Sources of insecurity: bombing, kidnapping, fire out breaks, stampede, etc.

Teacher guides pupils to state the sources of insecurity.

SOURCES OF DANGER AND INSECURITY

2. How to keep away from danger:

  • adhere to parental and teacher’s advice
  • Report cases of insecurity to parents and teachers.
  • Being at alert all the time.
  • Avoid relating with strangers, etc.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher invites resource person from any of the security agencies to give talk on how to keep away from danger and seek for help.

IDENTIFICATION OF SECURITY AGENCIES AND THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES

1. Security Agencies: Police, FRSC,SSS, NDLEA, ICPC, NSCDC, NAFDAC, Military, Prisons, etc.

 ACTIVITIES

Teacher guides pupils to identify security agencies in Nigeria.

LEARNING RESOURCES: Textbooks, pictures, posters, handbills, etc.

WEEK 10

TOPIC/ CONTENT

IDENTIFICATION OF SECURITY AGENCIES AND THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES

– Police, FRSC, NDLEA, SSS, ICPC, NSCDC, Military, Prisons, NAFDAC, etc.

Teacher guides pupils to identify who to approach in the face of     danger.
