NERDC National Early Childhood Education Care Curriculum for physical development Ages 0-3 years

Week 1

Topic:  Personal Data

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to:

  1. Keep health, personal and family data of the Child.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to: By 24months

  1. Respond to and say his/her own name. By 36months
  2. say the name of the immediate family members e.g. Mother, father
  3. say his/her name
  4. say his/her sex;
  5. name his/her school and home address

Content:

  1. Child’s personal data: name, age, sex, etc.
  2. Family data: parents’ names, Position in family, home address.
  3. Health records Immunization, blood Group/ genotype. Assessment record.

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

  1. Encourage the child to talk about self and family in a one to one dialogue
  2. collect, record and provide health and personal data

(Sources of information: parents, guardian, sibling, health workers etc.)

  • Observe physical and visible immunization on the child.
  • Keep personal data of the child including health and birth certificates and family records
  • Guide the child to know and say when He/ she is ill

Activities – Child: By 24 months

  1. Children talk to themselves about their family
  2. Children ask their parents about themselves and their family

By 36 months

Children talk to their caregivers/ teacher about themselves and their Family.

Caring/Learning Materials:

  1. Child’s personal file
  2. Birth record
  3. Height/weight scale
  4. Tape rule, tape measure.
  5. Growth Chart.
  6. Immunization card
  7. Health Records
  8. Child Assessment Instrument/Records.

Evaluation Guide: Child by 36 months:

  1. Identify self by name, age, sex.
  2. Identify family.
  3. Name school and home address.

Parent/Caregiver

  1. Have clear profile condition, personal background of the child
  2. Knowledge of any potential risk to the child (related to health

E.g. allergy to drugs and foods) etc.

  • Maintain accurate record of child’s hearing speech and sight.
  • to communicate with child
  • Identify signs of ill health and refer for Medical Attention.

Week 2

Topic:  Child Growth, Monitoring and Caring

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to

  1. Measure, observe and monitor growth of the child
  2. Obtain, observe and administer foods necessary for growth.
  3. Monitor child’s Increased mobility and coordination to prevent accompanying risks (in play, activities of under 24 months old).
  4. Observe and monitor child’s movement skills in activities such as climbing, playing ball, crawling etc.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to By 24 months

  1. Interact with the caregiver and other children by 36 months.
  • Perform physical activities like jumping, playing ball etc.

Content:

 1.   Basic physiological needs of the growing child

2.    Sources and roles of foods (including food supplement e.g. Vit. A

3. Developmental Milestones

4. Growth monitoring and promotion

5. Movement skills (fine and gross motor).

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

1.  Measure weight and height at regular intervals

2. Arrange and feed the child with adequate food (Including food Supplement’s e.g. Vit A.)

3. Observe how children move and handle things at play

4. Stimulate child to participate in physical Activities

Activities – Child:

  1. Participate in physical using play materials/ equipment
  2. Accept food

Caring/Learning Materials:

Week 3

Topic:  Child Interaction with the Environment

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: should be able to:

1. Stimulate the child and monitor the different milestone in his development e.g. sitting, crawling, walking etc.

2. Create opportunity for exploring, experimenting with and discovering the environment.

3. Identify problems relating to child’s interaction with the environment.

4. Give adequate supervision to prevent accident in line with the child’s increasing activities.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to:

  1. Interact with the immediate Environment.
  2. Participate in physical activities

Content:

  1. Stages of physical development
  2. Management of increased mobility
  3. Physical coordination (e.g. climbing, crawling, etc.)

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

1. Provide adequate space for free movement of the child.

2. Stimulate the child manipulative activities (e.g. building blocks, sorting by colors, shape or size).

3. Interact with the land stimulates participation in exercises, play activities and games.

4. Monitor the play activities of the child and ensure non-violent Interaction.

5. Provide safe environment for Exploration

Activities – Child:

 Explore the environment e.g. plays with sands, water, etc.

Week 4:  

Topic:  Basic Rights of the Child

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to:

1. Show knowledge and respect the basic right of the child.

2. Provide and maintain conducive safe and friendly environment for the child to thrive.

3. Stimulate the child to perform physical activities.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to:

1. Explore the environment freely

2. Interact with people and materials within the environment.

3. Participate in physical activities.

Content:

1.            Basic rights of the child

2.            Child friendly Environment.

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

1.            Keep environment safe and friendly

2.            Interact with child and encourage him/her to socialize with others.

3. Stimulate the child with a variety of toys and other useful materials

4. Provide stimulating materials e.g. toys and participate in child activities e.g. run, jump, walk dance etc.

5. Supervise the play activities of the child and ensure non-violent

Interaction.

Activities – Child: By 36 months

1. Eats food, play, sleep freely.

2. The child moves freely and explore his/her environment
