Week 1

Topic: Childhood diseases, ailments and prevention

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to

  1. identify common diseases
  2. recognize signs and symptoms of childhood diseases
  3. prepare ORT/solution and administer when necessary
  4. identify cases of dental caries in children
  5. manage common childhood diseases
  6. Discourage self- medication.
  7.  refer sick child to
  8. appropriate health

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to

2. Preventive measures

•             Immunization

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

  1. Discuss childhood diseases with PHC staff.
  2. show and watch films of sick children/ healthy children
  3. watch for signs and symptoms of diseases and ailment
  4. examine child’s body on daily basis
  5. discuss preventive measures
  6. refer children for treatment when necessary

Activities – Child:

1.            Observe pictures of healthy and sick children, and discuss differences

2.            Watch films and look at pictures of children being immunized

3.            Participate in story telling dramatize play, singing etc. about healthy children disease and their prevention.

Caring/Learning Materials:

•             Posters/photographs/charts

•             Television

•             Video tape

•             Sugar

•             Salt

•             Clean water

•             Clean bottle

•             Container

•             Hand towel

•             Soap

•             Basin

•             Chewing stick tooth brush

•             Toothpaste with chloride

•             Sponge.

Evaluation Guide:

Child

1.            Talk about various diseases and their prevention

2.            Show signs of good health e.g. healthy bright eyes

3.            Practice proper food brushing

4.            Illness reported Caregiver/teacher

1.            Good knowledge of childhood diseases and their prevention

2.            Ability to prepare and administer ORT when needed

3.            Sick child referred to health Centre for treatment

4.            Identify cases of caries and refer to a dentist

5.            Provide healthy environment.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of home management of childhood diseases.

Week 2

Topic: Immunization

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to:

  1. ensure that child is immunized
  2. Refer sick child to appropriate health Centre.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to

1.            Show signs of good health

2.            Report illness/ailment

Content:

1.            Meaning of immunization as preventive measure

2.            Benefits of immunization

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

1.            Find out if child has been fully immunized

2.            Refer parents to PHC Centre for immunization of child

3.            Discuss the benefits of immunization

Activities – Child:

1.            Participate in storytelling, role play, singing etc.

2.            Mention some benefits of immunization

Caring/Learning Materials:

•             Posters/photographs charts

•             Newspaper cuttings.

Evaluation Guide:

Child

1. Healthy looking Caregiver/teacher Knowledge of various diseases requiring immunization.

Week 3

Topic:  3. Drug use and abuse.

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to

  1. say what drugs are
  2. Recognize that drugs should only be administered on prescription by a medical doctors.

3. Accept that drugs administered without doctor’s prescription is drug abuse.

4. Refer difficult cases to appropriate health Centre.

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to

1.            Report illness/ailment

2.            Must not take drugs without supervision.

Content:

Definition and examples of drugs

. Drug use

. Drug abuse

. Effect of drug abuse.

Activities – Parent/Caregiver:

1.            Invite a medical doctor to talk on drug, drug use and drug abuse

2.            Refer child for medical help.

Activities – Child:

1.            Report to an adult when not feeling well

2.            Watch film and look at pictures of the effect of drug abuse on children

Caring/Learning Materials:

•             Posters/photographs of effect of drug abuse

Evaluation Guide:

Child

1. Talk about the effect of drug abuse.

Caregiver/teacher

1.            Knowledge of drugs and drug abuse

2.            Refer sick child to health Centre.

Week 4

Topic:  care of the body

Performance Objectives – Parent/Caregiver: Should be able to

1.            Teach child how to care for different parts of the body

2.            Demonstrate proper caring of different parts of the body

3.            Inform child about the dangers of eating too much sweet

4.            Discuss consequences of neglecting care of the body

5.            Teach use of proper cleaning materials

Performance Objectives – Child: Should be able to

1.            Identify different parts of the body

2.            Care for different parts of the body

Content:

1. Parts of the body

•             Hair

Evaluation Guide:

Child

1.            Wash own hand/self

2.            Seek help when needed

Parent/caregiver

1. Knowledge of proper care of the body

2.            Practice proper of primary teeth and others of the body

3.            Allow children independence in taking care of themselves
