FOOD AND NUTRITION SCHEME OF WORK (0 – 2 YEARS)

FOOD AND NUTRITION: (BREASTFEEDING AND COMPLIMENTARY FEEDING)

ISSUES

BEAST FEEDING (Exclusively breast feeding 0-6months)

PARENT & CAREGIVER

  1. Discuss benefits of exclusive beast-feeding
  2. practice exclusive breast- feeding (EBF) in the first 6-months of life
  3. discuss the importance of colostrums
  4. Discuss wrong breast – feeding practices and the problems of breast- feeding e.g. cracked and sore nipple (s) etc.
  5. The appropriate positioning of child during breastfeeding
  6. extraction and preservation  of breast milk
  7. breast feeding in special  cases e.g. HIV/AIDs positive mothers

ISSUES

 Complimentary feeding (7-36 Months)

PARENT & CAREGIVER

i. Child should continue to accept breast- feeding

ii. discuss the meaning and examples of complimentary foods, such as 

  • soft foods
  • enriched pap
  • semi-solid
  • family food

iii. discuss the importance of  complimentary foods to the mother

iv. Process different food items suitable as complementary foods

v. produce nutritious  foods from local sources

vi. Identify and provide supplements appropriate for the children e.g. vitamin A.

vii. Identify signs of malnutrition in children.

viii. Identify signs of food allergies.

ix. Discuss some food preparation/processing methods e.g. heat treatment soaking /cooking/fermentation drying etc.

x. Stages of feeding  children with suitable complementary foods in the following order start with very soft food e.g. enriched pap

– semi soli

– family food 

-start with  very soft food e.g. enriched pap

-semi solid

-family food

Practice the use of spoon and cup for feeding

Xi practice with  complimentary food e.g. – child’s refusal to accept complimentary food

-mishandling processes

-malnutrition

-reaction to food allergy

ISSUES

FOOD TABOOS/HARM-FUL FEEDING PRACTICES

  1. identify harmful food taboos and practices within the  community
  2. discuss reasons why mothers should not discard the first yellowish  breast milk (colostrums)
  3. list the effects of harmful feeding practices related to children e.g. not giving meat or egg to children while eating
  4. Discuss the effects of some harmful traditional food taboos e.g. night blindness, kwashiorkor, rickets, obesity etc.
  5.  discourage an discuss t the effect of giving   pre-lacteals and  administration of local concoction to children

PARENT & CAREGIVER

  1. Say when he/she is ill
  2. Continue to accept breast feeding/feedings during illness
  3. Ask for what he/she likes to eat.
  4. Accept ORT solution when ill

FEEDING DURING ILLNESS

i. identify different childhood feeding illness

ii. identify problems associated with feeding a sick child

iii. encourage  child to accept food during  illnesses give small portion at a time

iv identify the importance of liquid food to a sick child

v. Prepare and administer ORT/SS Solution for the sick child where  needs be

iv maintain hygienic conditions when preparing food and feeding the sick child

FOOD AND NUTRITION NURSERY 1, 2 AND KINDERGARTEN 3- 5 YEARS

Basic food Functions

Educate parents on basic function of food.

  • Protein – growth and body building food e.g. fish, beans , egg, milk , liver etc.
  • Carbohydrates – energy giving food e.g. yam cocoyam , bread rice , solid pap liquid pap, noodle porridge etc.
  • Vitamins – protective and fighting disease food e.g. vegetable – lettuce, spinach, ugwu, okro, ewedu, water –leaf, bitter leaf, etc fruits – orange , carrot, apple, water – melon , banana, mango, pineapple, pawpaw etc.
  • Fats & oil – butter , palm-oil, groundnut oil,  peanut butter etc.

  • Minerals  – boiled plantain
  • Water – boiled water, natural fruit juice, beverages milk

Self-feeding

  • Give food in manageable portion to the child supervise children while eating with spoons or forks in the school

Food eating habits

 PARENT & CAREGIVER

  • Expose child to good table manners
  • Guide the child to correct bad table manners
  • Train the child to eat in a socially acceptable  manner
  • Train child on good sitting posture while eating , proper usage of plastic cutlery – fork spoon and  knife

Note: Parents are to be advised to give one egg per day per child milk is also good as part of their meal everyday

  • Discuss nutrition deficient diseases among children e.g. night blindness, kwashiorkor, rickets dental crisis etc.
  • Food related disorder among children .g obesity kwashiorkor

 PARENT & CAREGIVER

  • Prepare food for children under hygienic condition
  • Encourage children to wash hands after using toilet, washing of hands before and after every meal, cover leftover food, wash fruit before eating, avoid eating unripe fruit.
