Week 1

Topic:    Meaning and importance of good Governance

Performance objectives

  1. Explain good governance
  2. Identify government for different levels;
  3. State features of good governance.

Contents

  1. Art of governing people
  2. Local Government state
  3. Government Federal Government.
  4. Description of closeness of each level of people.

Teacher’s Activities        

  1. Guides pupils to explain Governance.
  2. Assist pupils to  Identify levels of governance.

Student’s Activities

  1. Explain Government.
  2. Identify levels of governance.

Week 2

Topic: Types of Government.

Performance objectives

  1. Explain types of government;
  2. Differentiate between the various types of government e.g. traditional and constitutional.

Contents

  1. Types of Government
    • Monarchy-King e.g. Jordan, Morocco.
    • Traditional e.g. Oba, Emir, Obi           
    • Oligarchy- usually by the powerful or privileged people.
    • Constitutional e.g. Parliamentary or Presidential.     
  2. Differences between the different Types of Government:
    • Monarchy – King or Queen, hereditary or succession. No end to tenure.
    • Oligarchy – few people who are privileged or powerful

Teacher’s Activities        

  1. Guides pupils to identify the leaders in their communities and what they do.
  2. Leads pupils to look at pictures and identify leaders in government and what they do.
  3. Organizes pupils to discuss the difference between the two.

Student’s Activities

  1. Read about traditional rulers.
  2. Observe pictures and make notes.
  3. Watch video clips of government in action.
  4. Discuss the differences between types of government in groups

  3. Discuss the need to imbibe values in the society.

  1. Meaning of values.
  2. Values example of obedience, loyalty, dedication, honesty, etc.
    1. Contentment
    1. Right attitude to work
  3. Need for civic values in the society e.g. Promote, democracy, promote human rights etc.

  1. Guides discussion on education.
  2. Leads pupils to identify at least five civic values.
  3. Guides pupils to identify people in the society with good civic values.

  2. Characteristics:
    1. Common territory
    1. Common customs and traditions.
    1. Common economy
    1. Common language (understanding each other)

  1. Guides the pupils to explain the meaning of a nation.
  2. Helps pupils identify and explain the characteristics of a nation using relevant teaching resources.

Student’s Activities

  1. Explain the meaning of a nation using relevant resources.
  2. Identify and explain the characteristics of a nation using relevant learning resources.

Topic: Ethnicity and its Problems.

Performance objectives

  1. State the meaning of ethnicity;
  2. List causes of ethnicity in Nigeria;
  3. Explain the consequences of ethnicity in Nigeria;
  4. Mention how to solve the problem of ethnicity.

Contents

  1. Ethnicity: ethnic or social group consciousness that influence social economic and political decisions.
  2. Causes of ethnicity:-feeling that one’s social group has been cheated in resource allocation, colonialism, poverty, illiteracy, political strategy to win election etc.
  3. Consequences of ethnicity: communal conflict, political violence, nepotism/discrimination, underdevelopment, waste of manpower, resources etc.

Teacher’s Activities        

  1. Leads pupils to state the meaning of ethnicity.
  2. Guides the pupils to list causes of ethnicity in Nigeria.
  3. Organizes and helps pupils to feel the consequences of ethnicity.
